 Tech Harmony IT Help

What's the story behind the Tech Harmony business?

The proprietor loves ensuring things work properly and he loves helping people, so he started this business, see the quick history here.

1996-97

Programming hit the radar during a teaching diploma in 1989. Students were given access to an Apple II-e computer and were required to move a shape in a curved arc - optionally with sound, which captured Murray's imagination. It was pretty cool so this activity was earmarked for later action and follow up. Murray remembers being very excited over the curriculum offered by Swinburne University College of Technical and Further Education (TAFE). During his two years there he hungrily absorbed everything technical. The Business Diploma in Software Development gave him enough coverage of the IT basics and business needs that he was offered an entry level IT role with the Australian Commonwealth Public Service.

Murray remembers taking great delight in tweaking the household IBM-compatible PC in order to stuff as much software as possible (mostly drivers), into the 640 kibibytes of conventional memory. He also remembers making mistakes that cost him money, 'but I learned, I learned', he says. He chose to pursue Software Development instead of system support because it paid better and he had children to feed. Yet there was something about system support...

1998-2014

The Commonwealth was happy to further Murray's ambitions and he joined the 1998 intake into the Public Service in Canberra ACT. Working in the storage and access team taught him an immense amount about databases. Programming on IBM mainframe in TELON/COBOL and developing in CICS for batch and online programs, (huge DB2 database) can be described as an information rich environment. As Murray became skilled technically he also developed contacts among his colleagues and learned the skills associated with working in a very large organisation. He was given the design-lead role with the team that developed a metadata-driven, formatted text model for DB2. Murray worked on the SBR project for the Superannuation - Business Portal, providing metadata support and security-related design. Later roles involved liaison to embed consistent administrative and cultural practices across the business lines, particularly in response to e-security breaches. Part of the role was providing input into the security of the IT infrastructure.
